Kitchen Update Motivates me to cook

Kitchen update motivates me to cook more

I was feeling the doldrums about my kitchen. It was smaller than I wanted, cupboards were dated and I was feeling like I needed to move to make me feel like I wanted to create fabulous dishes in the kitchen. But to my surprise all I needed was to update the kitchen cabinets. New paint color and hardware made it work.

I have a beautiful new kitchen without the expense of a move.  It feels clean, works with my appliances and made my dark wood floor pop off the planet. I seriously could not stop smiling. It turned out so great.

We did it ourselves!

Here are some easy steps for Doing it Yourself:
1- Remove the doors from the frames and the drawer fronts. Remove the hardware too.
2- Use a finish remover in a liquid form. We used a liquid sander product we bought at Home Depot
3-Set up a area in a well ventilated area (garage) with sawhorses and a place to set the doors and drawer fronts to dry between coats
4- Using Glidden Gripper primer apply 2-3 coats with a brush to the existing cabinet frames. Use a roller with a really good foam roller and change it often for the doors and the fronts of the drawers
5- Paint with Behr semi gloss with primer 2-3 coats of paint using the same method as above
6- Allow to dry thoroughly before putting the handles and hinges back on

It took 3 full 8 hour days to complete.  I am so glad that we tackled this project. Now I am ready to start on some of the other wood cabinets throughout the house.  I love the results and the facelift was good for both the kitchen and me.

I cannot believe how a little paint and some hardware from IKEA made me feel so much better.

Thanks, I am working on a What to store food storage guide that will hopefully simplify the process.
